Charlestown Vet - Pet Surgery

Pet Surgery

Our clinic provides a range of routine and advanced pet surgery procedures. Every surgery is carefully planned, with a strong focus on patient safety, effective pain management, and attentive aftercare to support a smooth recovery.

Soft Tissue & Orthopaedic Surgery

We perform a wide range of soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures to improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life. These include desexing, lump removals, soft palate surgery, luxating patella correction, and cruciate ligament repair. For cruciate surgery, we offer both Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) and extra-capsular repair, depending on your pet’s individual needs.

Desexing

Desexing is a common surgical procedure that can support long-term health and behaviour. We recommend desexing cats and dogs at around five to six months of age, with rabbits and guinea pigs often desexed earlier due to their earlier maturity. All desexing patients receive appropriate pain relief, intravenous fluids during surgery, and close monitoring, with most pets able to return home the same day.

Dentistry

Dental procedures are performed with careful assessment and modern equipment. We use ultrasonic scaling and specialised dental instruments to treat dental disease and, where needed, perform extractions in a gentle and controlled way. Local anaesthetic nerve blocks and pain relief are used to help keep your pet comfortable and support faster recovery.

Microchipping & Scanning

We provide microchipping for cats and dogs, helping ensure pets can be quickly identified and returned home if they become lost. We also scan stray pets brought into the clinic, particularly following storms or emergencies.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery may be used for certain shallow skin lesions and tumours. This technique allows targeted treatment while minimising damage to surrounding tissue.

Oncology

For pets diagnosed with cancer, surgery may form part of a broader treatment plan. We work closely with specialist veterinary oncologists to help tailor treatment options, including chemotherapy when appropriate.

Intensive Care & Monitoring

Our surgical patients are closely monitored before, during, and after their procedure. We use modern monitoring equipment and skilled nursing care to support recovery, with access to emergency and after-hours care through our referral partners when needed.

Pet surgery is about more than the procedure itself. It’s about careful planning, clear communication, and compassionate care every step of the way.
