Charlestown Vet - Desexing

Desexing

Desexing is a routine surgical procedure that plays an important role in supporting your pet’s long-term health and wellbeing. At Charlestown Vet Clinic, we provide desexing for cats, dogs, and small animals, using modern anaesthetic protocols and attentive aftercare to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety.

For cats and dogs, desexing is generally recommended at around five to six months of age. Rabbits and guinea pigs are often desexed earlier due to their earlier sexual maturity. Our Vets are happy to discuss the most appropriate timing for your pet, taking into account their species, breed, size, and individual health needs.

Desexing offers a number of health and behavioural benefits. These may include reducing the risk of certain reproductive diseases, helping prevent unwanted litters, and supporting more settled behaviour as pets mature. Every pet is different, and our team will take the time to explain the benefits and considerations so you can make an informed decision.

Your pet’s comfort is a priority throughout the desexing process. All desexing patients receive pain relief before and after surgery, along with intravenous fluids during the procedure to support blood pressure and reduce anaesthetic risk. Pets are closely monitored by our experienced team and typically return home the same day with clear aftercare instructions.

Following surgery, we provide guidance on recovery, activity levels, and pain management, and we’re always available to answer questions or check in if you have concerns. Our goal is to make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible for both you and your pet.
